ENGR2330 - Intro to Mechanical Prototyping

Inkjet Printer "Mechtopsy"

The "mechtopsy" is a fun and unique way to kick off a semester of prototyping. As a class, students are required to do a complete teardown of an inkjet printer. In the span of an hour and half, the printer is reduced to a pile of injection molded parts, shafts, pulleys, belts, gears, motors, and innumerable fasteners. Students document the process with photographs as they go, and each student takes one to three parts to attempt to model in CAD software. The payoff comes when, as a class, the students reassemble all parts of the printer to build a valid, functional CAD assembly.
